Coming up with a title for your blog post is probably one of the most over looked aspect of the entire writing process, because it’s so simple and people believe “anything will do”. Wrong. Your title must persuade readers. With over 2 million posts being published daily, it’s important to make yours stand out, and there’s loads of ways on how you can do exactly that. I love WordPress because the first few lines are already visible in the reader, before any clicking has even begun.
“On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”
Your blog post title will appear in search engine results, RSS feeds, links from other bloggers, social media sites, on your achieve pages, so it’s flippin’ important to make it count.

1. ENGAGE YOUR AUDIENCE
Easier said than done, right? Think about what would make you want to click onto and read a blog post. The answer is surely something you can refer to and feel you can benefit from. It’s important to keep the post content diverse, but to also write personally as if you are just talking to one person. These small changes will really make the reader feel you are truly engaging with them and understand them.
2. USE NUMBERS
I use number where possible, because it works. Like this post, ‘10 Tips for Writing Fabulously Intoxicating Blog Titles’. There are no rules when it comes to what the number is, or how you use them (percentage, fraction – it’s like being back at school!).
3. USE INTERESTING ADJECTIVES
Be creative with your wording! You should basically aim to fill your blog post title with keywords, and adjectives are a great way to do this.
4. COMMUNICATE A BENEFIT
Give people an incentive to read your blog post, this acts as an extra little push in the right direction. Perhaps throw in a freebie such as a piece of documentation or extended list for them to keep hold of. I have started to include free checklists for readers to download.
5. ASK A QUESTION
Turning your blog post title into a question often draws readers in who have that question in their mind, it makes them think “huh, I can refer to that”. You must absolutely ensure that you do actually answer the question in your blog post, because that’s why the viewer clicked on your post in the first place.
If you’re going to do a list type of post, avoid the word things. There are always much more effective alternative such as:
To put some of these into context, you could use ‘5 simple blogging tips + tricks‘, or ‘10 reasons why I love link building or How to start a Blog‘.
I hope these tips helped you and brought a rush of inspiration. A useful formula to remember for achieving a bangin’ title goes something like this:
NUMBER OR TRIGGER WORD + ADJECTIVE + KEYWORD + PROMISE
So, ‘How You Can Effortlessly Sell Your Home in Less than 24 Hours’ would work.
